The cemetery opened in 1898 as a municipal burial ground, following a donation of land by the Siemens family. It initially covered one hectare and later grew to about six.
The Neo-Gothic brick chapel was already complete at the opening. The first family tombs appeared in 1900, with further examples added through 1934. Their wall monuments recall the families of Biesdorf’s agricultural past. Restoration in 1994–95 preserved an important part of this historic burial culture.
Another strand of remembrance concerns victims of war and violence: six communal burial areas contain 360 people. Unitas, installed in 1998, added a more recent work of art.
